Realistic Experience Participants must profitably produce high quality, laser controlled circuit boards to meet the needs of demanding customers. Assembly and testing of the units requires complex precision work. To be successful, the group must communicate effectively, coordinate interdepartmental activities, prudently manage resources (people, tools, and dollars), and develop quality relationships with vendors and customers. The simulation takes place over multiple business quarters. Participants are responsible for the entire operation of the company. They are given the freedom to make changes in leadership, organizational structure, roles and responsibilities. Financial statements are required for each quarter. Participants are assigned to different departments and roles. Each department has a different function. Departments are interdependent. Roles are not contrived or a form of "role play". The task is unknown and requires different skill sets from leadership to workers. The tasks of some of the departments are much more challenging creating bottlenecks to the overall process. To be successful, participants must learn to value and utilize the different natural skills that exist in their group. Because intra and interdepartmental teamwork are essential they have to build and manage relationships. Job satisfaction and team surveys administered by the "Personnel Department" measure the effectiveness of the team in this area.
